DEPENBROCK was commissioned by the state development company NRW.URBAN with both the planning and the construction of the project in three construction phases. DEPENBROCK’s ability to offer everything from a single source once again proved to be of great benefit to the client. In order to keep to the tight schedule, Bielefeld Civil Engineering carried out the development work at record-breaking speed.
Jörn Henrik Depenbrock, Shareholder and Managing Director: “Throughout the planning process, there was close coordination with the client and the Fraunhofer Society as the future operator of the FFB. This made it possible to respond to very specific building utilisation requirements. The detailed planning and implementation of efficient clean room technology and specific drying rooms enabled the establishment of an optimal overall building structure at an early stage. This also included the conceptual services of our technical building equipment department (TGA), which was involved already from an early stage of planning.”
In the new building, state-of-the-art research and development work will enable industries in Germany and Europe to run battery cell production operations that are both economical and sustainable. The construction project is therefore a milestone in the strategically important research field of battery cell production. The aim is to work together with the industry to establish ecological battery cell production that is increasingly independent of suppliers from the Far East. In future, over 150 scientists will be working on the planning and development of production processes in the Hansa-Business-Park Münster on an area of around 55,000 m2.
Energy and building concept
The construction of the FFB battery cell research facility in the Hansa-Business-Park Münster is part of the realignment of German energy policy. In future, basic research will be carried out at this site in order to be able to produce energy storage systems using methods that are both highly ecological and highly economical. A forward-looking project that marks a major step forward for environmental protection, and especially for the energy transition.
Among other things, TGA’s plans specified the installation of six 1-MW transformers, one high-temperature heat pump operated with natural refrigerant (global warming potential GWP = 0), three 3.3-MW-output chillers with low global warming potential, and six dry coolers. Under the total contractor agreement, the creation of four laboratories including the interior fittings was also part of the order.
