Volkswagen AG is investing significantly more than 100 million euros in the expansion of its Emden site, the world’s lead plant for the production of the successful Passat model. This also includes the construction of a new, ultra-modern logistics hall to optimize material flows.
Depenbrock was awarded the contract to carry out all civil engineering work as well as the hall construction with a floor area of 46,000 m2 and a height of 12 m, including extensions for incoming goods, outgoing goods and empties handling.
The civil engineering department was tasked with ensuring low-dust or dust-free cement consolidation during site preparation. A task that could be solved by using a special floor milling machine. Flexibility was required when the civil engineering team encountered unexpected ground conditions. Despite the separate handling of this soil that became necessary as a result, the agreed schedule – May to June 2012 – could be adhered to.
The foundations for the hall construction and the floor slab were designed as deep foundations. For this purpose, highly reinforced individual foundations and in-situ concrete beams, connected to a 47 cm thick floor slab, were placed on the more than 2,500 bored piles. Further key data on the large material masses required for the ground-floor hall (approx. 245 x 168 m) in skeleton construction: 288 reinforced concrete columns, 3,800 tons of structural steel, 28,360 m3 of concrete and 1,250 tons of steel construction. In order to have the required quantities available at all times, the concrete was produced in a mobile mixing plant directly on the construction site.
