The City of Cologne’s building management department has built a new building with three sports hall bays in a stacked design (one single hall and one double hall), including a new sports hall. The project involved the tendering of the construction of a new school building for the existing Johann Gottfried-Herder-Gymnasium in Kattowitzer Straße, including ancillary areas and a classroom wing with four classrooms. Before the new building is erected, the existing building with two sports hall fields and a toilet wing must be demolished.
Die Architektur
“Sport at all levels” is the motto of the new building. The basic idea behind the design is to blend in harmoniously with the existing building, both in terms of the design and the positioning and arrangement of the functions, while at the same time enabling efficient use of the new building.
The ground floor houses the two-storey, multifunctional foyer with adjoining main staircase incl. Elevator for barrier-free access to all floors. The result is a spacious, prestigious arrival and at the same time the light-flooded heart of the building with a variety of views both inwards and outwards. The two-court sports hall is located in the basement, with the single-court sports hall on the 1st floor above. These two sports areas, with boot and sneaker corridors to the changing rooms and clearly structured side rooms, create an ideal complement to the hall areas with natural light.
The 2nd floor houses the new classroom wing, which is connected to the existing building via a bridge. The new classroom wing will create a versatile learning environment with a bright, open design that promotes individual learning, communication and cohesion.
The design concept of the new building creates a new interpretation of the existing building. This can be seen both inside and out in terms of materiality and color. A light red clinker brick forms the base of the building, on which the upper floors rest with a light beige metal façade. The differentiated building cubature, large-format windows and the interplay between smooth and perforated elements create a dynamic, constantly changing façade.
Das Energie- und Gebäudekonzept
The building will be constructed in accordance with energy efficiency level 40.
Heat is supplied for the base load by air-to-water heat pumps and the existing gas boiler is used to cover the peak load. Heat is transferred via underfloor heating systems.
The new building will have mechanical supply and exhaust air systems incl. Heat recovery for the individual areas. In addition, the windows can be opened and closed manually and motorized in the sports halls.
The lighting is provided by LED lights. A PV system with approx. 162 kWp will be installed on the extensively greened roof, which is forecast to generate approx. 145,000 kWh of energy per year.
