To facilitate shipping traffic, a consortium is increasing the bed width of the Kiel Canal to 70 metres over a construction period of 4 years. Depenbrock Bau was awarded the contract for two of six construction phases.
The canal is to be widened by relocating the northern embankment and the new canal embankment is to be secured and planted. For this purpose, 1.5 million cubic metres of dry soil are to be removed and placed in storage areas. One million cubic metres of it has to be loaded onto ships, transported to the other side of the Kiel Canal, unloaded and processed there.
In addition, the dredged material (one million cubic metres) must be transported to an area in the Bay of Kiel. The contract also includes the construction of service roads, footpaths and cycle paths along the canal. The expansion requires various dismantling operations along with the construction of retaining walls, operating areas and discharge structures, as well as landscaping works.
