Stemwede, 11/12/2023 – The City of Dortmund has awarded the contract for construction of the Burgholzstrasse school centre to the DEPENBROCK Group of East Westphalia.
The construction project was put out to tender across Europe in 2022. DEPENBROCK Systembau, based in Bielefeld, will plan and execute the construction,
which is scheduled to begin in November of next year. The finished school centre will be handed over in March 2027.

The Burgholzstrasse school centre in the north of Dortmund will include a primary and special school, a daycare centre (KITA), a district workshop and the associated outdoor facilities on a total area of about 17,000 square metres. The total planning and construction cost of the school centre is estimated at more than 70 million euros. DEPENBROCK Systembau will first prepare the design planning and then file the building and drainage application.

DEPENBROCK commissioned the renowned architectural firm rkw+, based in Münster, to plan the project. Sustainability via EH-40 standard The buildings are constructed sustainably to the EH-40 standard. That designation indicates that a building constructed to this standard consumes only 40 percent of the primary energy that a standard building requires. This saves heating and electricity costs during subsequent operation – and reduces the impact on the climate. Other highlights: the roofs of the school buildings are being fitted with a photovoltaic system (PV), and the centre’s parking spaces are widely equipped with e-charging stations. There is also a battery storage system to ensure the greatest possible use of self-generated electricity.

The planned greening of the façades and roofs, which includes automatic irrigation and a rainwater cistern, also contributes to the sustainability of the buildings. Finally, the ventilation of the buildings, which is to be completely mechanical, is also sustainable. Over 80 percent of the heat can be recovered via the integrated heat recovery system, while at the same time ensuring a high level of air exchange. This provides for an optimal learning environment. “We are delighted to be able to make a contribution to the City of Dortmund’s ambitious climate targets with the construction of the Burgholzstrasse school centre,” says Managing Director and shareholder Jörn Henrik Depenbrock. “We have had good experience with sustainable construction ourselves and have made our company headquarters almost CO2-neutral by using geothermal energy in combination with photovoltaics.”
