The construction of the first LNG terminal on German soil in Wilhelmshaven marked the start of the realignment to secure the nationwide energy supply. While work on the implementation of this project was still in full swing, DEPENBROCK Ingenieurwasserbau received the follow-up order from Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG for the construction of another LNG jetty in Stade-Bützfleth. The order volume of over EUR 150 million as part of a consortium is the largest single order in the company’s history to date.
The contract was awarded on the basis of a secondary tender, which made it possible to meet the ambitious schedule using extensive floating equipment and experienced specialist personnel. Unlike in Wilhelmshaven, where the LNG jetty was added to the existing bridge of a transshipment facility, in Stade the LNG import jetty located south of the northern port was built from scratch.
147 in-situ concrete piles were driven for the foundation of the terminal platform. The piling work ran from Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the dredging work continued seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
The work also included the construction of 30 bollards, 1,400 m of access walkways, 1,500 m of access road and 13,000 m² of bank reinforcement with armourstones. It also required 150,000 m3 of soil to raise the dike. In addition, two 25-metre towers were erected. Electrical equipment such as lighting, flow measurement instrumentation and remote activation of the bollards were also part of the contract.
The deadline was met: after just 330 days of construction, the terminal platform of what is currently the largest waterside construction project in Germany’s ports was handed over to the client on schedule in December 2023. Thanks to the great commitment of everyone involved, the LNG jetty was completed to such an extent that the special ship was able to moor and commence operations. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2024.
Erik Depenbrock, Managing Partner: “At the opening of the LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke of a new German pace at which infrastructure projects are to be implemented in the future. We are happy to keep up this pace. And we have also set this pace in Stade.”
