Revetment construction Wangerooge

Revetments on the coast have the function of protecting dykes from erosion caused by the effects of waves and currents. As the western revetment on the island of Wangerooge was becoming increasingly unstable, extensive construction work was required to repair it. DEPENBROCK successfully completed this special contract between May and December 2024.

The replacement of the revetments in the west of the island of Wangerooge to improve flood protection against storm surges was divided into three main areas: First, the construction jetty in the harbor was adapted in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) by building a fence system. The focus of the construction activities for the restoration area was the installation of ballast material and armourstones as well as the production of a grout with a hydraulically bonded grout. This work was also carried out for the new construction area in the third block.

The amount of material that had to be handled for the construction project within eight months is impressive: a total of around 105,000 tons of armourstone and gravel were delivered, handled and installed during this period.

Adapting the work phases to the tides posed a major challenge. Much of the work was tide-dependent and could only be carried out at low tide. In order to achieve the greatest possible efficiency, the use of powerful machines – such as excavators with a particularly long reach – was essential.
