The town of Burgwedel has decided to renovate the Grossburgwedel secondary school at the “Auf der Ramhorst 1” site. In order to accommodate the increasing number of pupils over the next few years, the first step is to build an extension for the five-class secondary school and a new three-court sports hall.
Architecture
Grossburgwedel secondary school is located in the southern part of the district, which has about 10,000 residents. The main access to the school grounds is via Hannoversche Strasse to the west, where the bus station and the school parking lots are located.
The overall planning concept is based on an approach that combines the existing and remaining parts of the grammar school with the new replacement building and the sports hall in terms of function and design in order to create optimum conditions in support of the educational concept in the new building ensemble and the outdoor facilities. Specifically, the functional processes in school operations, internal and external development, the new student flows, and the external uses – sports hall, existing auditorium, and possibly a music room – and the surrounding buildings and their uses must all be incorporated into the concept.
Furthermore, the urban planning context for the reconfiguration of the structural landscape, the height differences on the property and, in particular, the exterior/interior design and architectural statement are decisive criteria for the overall planning concept.
Energy and building concept
In order to optimise energy requirements, the building envelope was planned in accordance with EnEV 2014 standards as of 2016. Heat is generated via local heating, which is produced in the city’s own combined heat and power plant. Heat is distributed via radiators and, in the sports hall, via radiant ceiling panels. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery is planned for the interior rooms. Pre-installation for decentralised ventilation is planned in the classrooms. The roofs are pre-equipped for the installation of photovoltaic modules.
Electrical energy is supplied as low-voltage power and LED technology is used for the lighting.
